Backyard Prairie Flower ID of the week:
Callirhoe digitata, Callirhoe digitata. Common Name: Finger poppy-mallow, Poppy mallow, Standing winecup, Wine cup, Winecup Malvaceae (Mallow Family)
The winecup is a Perennial (A plant or plant species with a normal life cycle exceeding two years.) growing 8–20 inches tall, depending on moisture and soil, with gray-green stems. Flowers have 5 petals, cup-shaped at first and opening out nearly flat as the flower matures. They are violet to red-violet, sometimes white, 1–2 inches across.
Winecups are blooming early this year and should bloom throughout the year to next freeze.
